Robert Redford is an actor, director, producer, businessman, environmentalist, and philanthropist. He has starred in numerous television programs and films and won numerous awards for his work in the film industry. Robert is, also, the founder of the Sundance Film Festival.

 

Charles Robert Redford Jr. was born in 1936 in Santa Monica, California. The family moved to Van Nuys, where Robert graduated from Van Nuys High School in 1954. He then attended the University of Colorado in Boulder for a year and a half before losing his scholarship. He next traveled in Europe for awhile before moving on to study painting at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. He also studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, New York.

 

Robert Redford began his career with many roles on television and in the theater. His Broadway debut was a small role in Tall Story in 1959. His big screen debut was in a film by the same name, Tall Story, in 1960. Many more roles led to his roles in the successful films The Way We Were and The Sting in 1973. More roles followed in front of and behind the camera. He has received awards and honors for his work acting, producing, and directing. Much of his later work can be seen as supporting his political and social activities and causes.

 

In the last decades of the 1900s with proceeds from his success, he founded the Sundance Institute, Sundance Cinemas, Sundance Catalogue, and the Sundance Channel, all in or near Park City, Utah. The Sundance Film Festival was founded in 1978 to support independent filmmakers and their films.

 

Robert was married to Lola Van Wagenen from 1958 until 1985. They had four children. In 2009, he married Sibylle Szaggars. In 2011, a biography on Robert Redford by Alfred A. Knopf was published.

 

Robert has been politically and socially active. He supports environmentalism, Native American rights, LGBT rights, and the arts. He is a Pitzer College Trustee and in 2012 they launched the Robert Redford Conservancy for Southern California Sustainability.
