Bernie Williams is a former professional baseball player, a musician, and an author. He played for the New York Yankees from 1991 until 2006. In 2003 and 2009 he released jazz albums. Williams, also, co-authored books in 2009 and 2011.
Bernabe Williams Figueroa Jr. was born in 1968 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His family lived in the Bronx, New York until they moved to Puerto Rico when he was a toddler. As a teenager, Williams played classical guitar, baseball, and track and field. In fact, he won track and field medals in the 1984 Central American and Carribean Junior Championships in Athletics.
While still too young to sign a professional contract, the Yankees put Williams in a training camp in Connecticut. He signed with the Yankees on his 17th birthday. Williams played center field. During his career with the Yankees, he played on four of their World Series championship teams, was a five-time MLB All-Star, and won four Golden Glove Awards. He earned other records and awards, has a plaque at Yankee Stadium, and his former number, 51, has been retired.
His music is influenced by jazz, classical, pop, Brazilian, and Latin sounds. In 2010, he was part of the World Rhythms Tour with Basia. He, also, performed at the 2010 Central American and Carribean Games opening ceremony. In 2011, he was featured in Making Music Magazine. In 2016, Williams earned his Bachelor of Music from the Manhatten School of Music.Williams’ philanthropy, also, showcases his love of music. He supports Little Kids Rock, which supports music education in disadvantaged U.S. public schools. Other efforts, including personal appearances and signed guitars for auction, benefit music programs and other charitable organizations as well.
Bernie Williams married his wife, Waleska, in 1990. They have three children. They live in Armonk, New York and music has been a part of his family life as well. His music has been nominated for and won accolades.
