Jurnee Smollett-Bell is an actress. She has been in films and appeared on television numerous times. Her career began in 1991 when she was a young child. Recurring roles on family sitcoms led to starring on her own sitcom and then her big-screen debut.
Jurnee Diana Smollett was born in 1986 in New York, New York. She has a sister and four brothers. She and her siblings are all performers. They have also lived in California.
Her first work came with recurring roles on Full House and Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper. She then co-starred with her siblings on the sitcom On Our Own. Her big-screen debut came with the 1996 film Jack. She then was nominated for and won awards for her role in the film Eve’s Bayou. She has currently starred in almost a dozen films and almost two dozen television programs. She has been nominated for multiple awards and won NAACP Image Awards and a Critics’ Choice Award.
Jurnee has been a philanthropist since she was eleven years old. She has been active with HIV/AIDS causes and is on the Board of Directors of Artists for a New South Africa. She is, also, involved with and on the Board of Director of the Children’s Defense Fund. In 2010, Jurnee married the musician Josiah Bell. They had a son in 2016.
