“Mound Builders” are known to have lived in the area in pre-Columbian times. Osage Native American Indians next lived in the area when white settlers came. Missouri Territory was organized in 1813. Jefferson City was chosen as its capital in 1821, which was the same year as Missouri gained statehood. Jefferson City had Union and Confederate ties during the Civil War.
Jefferson City is between a humid subtropical and a humid continental climate. Summers are hot and rainy. Winters are cold with light snow. Spring and fall are transitional seasons.

Jefferson City is on the western edge of a major wine-producing region. It is home to Lincoln University. It is on the northern edge of the Ozark Plateau on the southern side of the Missouri River.
