A daily dose of Inspiration for you!

There are many things, people, and organizations that can bring out inspiration.  Sometimes an inspirational person can bring more attention to a cause or vice versa.  Sometimes a story can be inspirational.  A person that achieves despite a disability, can inspire other people to achieve.


Stephen Hawking is famous and celebrated for his work, despite his disability.  Stephen Hawking has ALS-Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.  Stephen was born in 1942 in Oxford, England, United Kingdom.  He went to several different schools during his formative years.  In 1962, he received his BA in Natural Science from University College, Oxford.  He then earned his PhD from Trinity Hall, Cambridge in 1965.


He began earning awards for his work in 1966 with the Adams Prize.  Today, he is known as a theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author, and the Director of Research of the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at the University of Cambridge.  He is known for his work that became known as Hawking Radiation and Penrose-Hawking Theorems.  Some of his honors or awards include him being a Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, being a lifetime member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, and receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom.  His work has been published for academics, lay people, and even for children.


Stephen Hawking was diagnosed with motor neuron disease while he was a doctoral student.  The disease has gradually paralyzed him over the years.  Needing support led to crutches, then to a wheelchair and more assistive devices.  Loved ones helped with lectures until other devices became necessary to assist him with communication.


Stephen Hawking married Jane Wilde in 1965.  They had three children.  They divorced in 1995 and she has published books chronicling their lives.  Stephen then married Elaine Mason in 1995.  They later divorced in 2006.


Stephen Hawking is concerned with the existence and perpetuation of the human race.  He encourages colonization of other planets.  He has come to accept his role as a model for disabled people, as his schooling and work made disability awareness and accommodation come to fruition since his graduate years at Cambridge.


Stephen Hawking has become well-known in popular culture as well.  He is part of television, film, and literature.  He, also, advertises products and has applied to trademark his name.  Be inspired!  Have a bright day!
