Humanitarianism is kindness, benevolence/helpfulness, and sympathy toward others.  Humanitarians can inspire others for many reasons.  Perhaps they shed light on something that needs or deserves more attention.  Perhaps they inspire you to do something in your life that is beneficial to others or even that is helpful or productive in your own life.  Whatever the outcome, humanitarians can be inspiring.  There are humanitarians that are ranked highly historically.

 

Bob Geldof is a musician, singer-songwriter, activist, philanthropist/humanitarian, author, actor, and radio DJ.  He became known as part of the punk rock movement, and co-writing “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” and starring as Pink in Pink Floyd – The Wall were major points of recognition for his career.

 

Robert Frederick Zenon Geldof was born in 1951 in Dublin, Ireland.  His mother died when he was a child.  He went on to attend Blackrock College and hold a series of odd jobs.  He was later hired to be a music journalist in Vancouver, British Columbia.  He also guest hosted a children’s show, Switchback on CBC.

 

He moved back to Ireland in 1975.  He became the lead singer of the rock group Boomtown Rats.  They made hits and stirred controversy gaining additional attention internationally. He starred in Pink Floyd – The Wall, which came out in 1982.  “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” came out in 1984.  In 1986, he left the Boomtown Rats for a solo career and published his best-selling autobiography.  His solo career had success individually and with collaborations.

 

Bob Geldof has continued to stir controversy and make music into the 2000s.  In addition, he has worked in politics and for charity.  He is known for his activism and his anti-poverty work on behalf of Africa.  In 1985, he and Midge Ure founded Band Aid to raise funds and awareness of the needs in Africa.  The concert Live Aid, the Live 8 concerts, and more have occurred.  He is involved with the ONE Campaign and the father’s rights movement.

 

Geldof married Paula Yates in 1986.  Their relationship resulted in three daughters.  They divorced in 1996, however he later adopted a daughter she had after their relationship and later her death.  One of his daughters died in 2014.  He married actress Jeanne Marine in 2015.

 

Bob Geldof has been awarded and honored multiple times.  He has been given multiple honorary degrees.  He was appointed an honorary knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II.  His contributions to the world and to music have been recognized.  Be inspired!  Have a bright day!
