Allison Brooks Janney was born in Boston, Massachusetts. She was raised in Dayton, Ohio. She was raised with two siblings. She attended Kenyon College. After studying acting with Paul Newman, she trained at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City and did summer programs at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

Allison’s brother fought addiction and ended his life, so her role on Mom has that personal connection with the addiction struggle. She has supported the American Heart Association, American Stroke Association, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, Heifer International, and STOMP Out Bullying.
