A daily dose of Inspiration for you!

Today’s source of Inspiration is a celebrity that has been active for over four decades.  Dolly Parton has been a singer-songwriter, producer, actress, author, musician, philanthropist, and businesswoman/executive.  She has been honored and awarded for much of her work.  She is the most honored female country performer and her awards reflect her accomplishments.


Dolly Parton was born in Sevier County, Tennessee.  She had eleven siblings.  Her family was poor and church and music were a huge part of their lives.  She started performing in church when she was six.  She started playing guitar on a homemade guitar and got her first real guitar from her uncle when she was eight.  She then began performing on local radio and television programs.  At thirteen, she recorded a single with Goldband Records and appeared at the Grand Ole Opry.  After graduating from high school in 1964, she moved to Nashville.


Her success began as a songwriter and commercial success came as a performer on Porter Wagoner’s television program.  They ended their partnership in 1974.  Hits did come as a solo artist, including “9 to 5” in 1980.  Duets with other artists, such as Kenny Rogers and Linda Ronstadt, became hits as well.  Dolly has had many successful tours.


Dolly started appearing on her own television program, Dolly!, in the later 1970s.  Her first appearance on film was 9 to 5.  This was a successful film and role for Dolly.  She has gone on to star in other films and have other television roles.  In 1998, she was ranked as the wealthiest country-music star by Nashville Business.


She is a co-owner of The Dollywood Company.  This company has the theme park Dollywood, a dinner theatre, Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede, and Dollywood’s Splash Country Waterpark.  The Myrtle Beach location has become Pirates Voyage Fun, Feast & Adventure.  Dolly was a co-owner of Sandollar Productions until her former manager’s retirement.  Following another venture, she started her new production company called Dixie Pixie Productions.


Dolly Parton and the Dollywood Foundation have supported many charitable causes.  She began Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.  They donate books to children in the U.S., Canada, United Kingdom, and Australia every year.  Dolly has raised money for other causes, including the American Red Cross and HIV/AIDS related charities.  She has donated money as well.


She married her husband in 1966.  He ran an asphalt road-paving business before retiring. He is private and has actually only seen her perform once.  They do not have children of their own, but have helped raise family members and Dolly is the godmother of celebrity Miley Cyrus.


Dolly Parton has published many books, including autobiographies and children’s books.  Her four plus decade-long career has been busy in several arenas.  Be inspired!  Have a bright day!
