A daily dose of Inspiration for you!

Sometimes an incredible true-life story can inspire you to do or try something you’ve always wanted to do or try.  My wish here is that you feel inspired, maybe not to surf as this is about two blind surfers, but to try and take this as inspiration that if these people’s dreams can come true, yours can too.

Derek Rabelo is a Brazilian surfer who was born blind.  Derek’s father loves surfing so much that he named his son after the first Hawaiian world surfing champion, Derek Ho.  He also encouraged his son, Derek, to learn to surf and took him to the ocean and a surf course.  Derek uses his other senses to help him navigate the waves.  He started surfing when he was seventeen.  Besides going to the ocean with his father he, also, goes surfing with friends and is just one of the gang when they hit the waves.

Haben Girma is both blind and deaf.  She is inspirational for multiple reasons.  She is the first blind and deaf graduate of Harvard Law School.  She is a disability rights attorney.  She was named by President Obama as a White House Champion of Change.  When she was 27 years old she decided to learn to surf.

Haben is from Berkeley, California.  She and her suf instructor surfed at Swami’s Beach in San Diego.  The two used physical queues to surf the waves.  Her instructor/coach is Matt Allen from the Maui Surf Academy.  She learned everything she could before the experience.  She is excited to face new challenges and learn new things.

Let these two amazing people inspire you to do something you’ve always wanted to do.  Be true to yourself.  Be inspired!  Have a bright day!
