Inventors are inspirational. Dan Dan Yang is an inventor, educator, and entrepreneur. She has been awarded over 20 patents as the recipient or co-recipient. Her first patents were for networking hardware and software. Her more recent patents were for educational and instructional tools, curriculum, and software. She is the founder of VINCI Education and the creator of VINCI Blended Learning.
Dan Dan Yang was born on June 13, 1965 in Nanjing, Jiangsu,China. In 1982, she earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Nanjing University. She then moved to France. She earneed her master’s and doctorate degrees from Paris-Sud 11 University. In 1991, she began teaching Optics and Photonics at a historic school in Paris. In 1993, she immigrated to Canada. She worked at MPB Technology. In 1996, she started the company, AFC Technologies. During this time, she invented a L-band amplifier. Another invention, broadband source (BBC), became the standard for component manufacturers and optical sensor and medical tomography research. Another invention, allowed doubling the signal traffic in a fiber and is a technology used for long distance or wide area telephony and data transport. In 2000, Yang attended Stanford University’s executive MBA program and started her second company, Dowslake Microsystems.
Dan Dan Yang married Zibin Lu, Ph.D. in 1990. She met her husband during her post-graduate study in Paris. They had a daughter in 1995 followed by another daughter in 2009. She has founded or invested in technology startups.
Yang has received several accolades and awards. Several notable awards have been given to her, from 1998’s Photonics Circle of Excellence to 2014’s American Business Award Gold as New Product Development Executive of the Year. In 2011, Forbes named Yang one of the Top 10 Female Entrepreneurs/Mompreneurs to Watch.
