Inventors are inspirational. Joy Mangano is an inventor, businesswoman, television personality, and entrepreneur. She is known for her practical inventions, initially her invention and successful selling of the Miracle Mop.
Joy Mangano was born on February 15, 1956 in Brooklyn, New York. She was raised in nearby Huntington. When she was a teenager, she worked at an animal hospital. Here she came up with her first invention. It was a fluorescent flea collar that was glow-in-the-dark, thus helping to keep pets safe at night. After high school, she attended Pace University. In 1978, she graduated with a BA in business administration. Also in 1978, she married Tony Miranne. Joy worked various jobs and they had three children. In 1989, they got divorced. She moved to Smithtown, New York with her children.
Housework led to her first invention, the Miracle Mop. In 1990, she developed the prototype and had 100 of them made. She sold them locally on Long Island and moved production to her father’s body shop in Deer Park in 1991. She incorporated as Arma Products and later renamed her company Ingenious Designs. In 1992, she sold 1,000 units to QVC on consignment. It sold decently, however she believed she could sell more and QVC agreed to let her try. She ended up selling all 18,000 mops she had produced in less than a half hour. She has since sold millions of Miracle Mops and many other products.
She now has over 100 patents. Her practical products include Huggable Hangers, the Forever Fragrant line of home odor neutralizers, Clothes It All Luggage System, and Shades Readers. She has partnered with several celebrities to sell their products on HSN as well. Since appearing on QVC in 1992, she began appearing regularly on HSN. She has sold on commercials and infomercials as well. Joy sold Ingenious Designs in 1999 to the Hone Shopping Network (HSN). She stayed on as the company’s president.
She has appeared on other television programs, won awards, and honors. In 2015, the movie Joy, based on her life, was released. Jennifer Lawrence portrayed Joy Mangano in the film. Be inspired! Have a bright day!
