Colorado is entirely above sea level. The lowest point in Colorado has an elevation of over 3,000 feet. This point is the highest low point of any state. It is higher than the high point of 18 other states and Washington, D.C.. Mount Elbert’s summit is the highest point in Colorado. At 14,440 feet it is also the highest point in the Rocky Mountains. Despite the State’s elevation, almost half of the state is flat, rolling land. These plains areas have patches of forests, buttes, and canyons. There is a lot of farmland in Colorado. In addition to crops, there is a lot of livestock raising. The geography is diverse overall. It ranges from alpine mountains, arid plains, and deserts to canyons, rivers, lakes, and forests.
Colorado was defined by lines of latitude and longitude. It is one of only three states whose borders are defined this way. Colorado is considered as part of the Western United States, the Southwestern United States, and the Mountain States. It was named for the Colorado River and its capital and largest city is Denver. Colorado is bordered by Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Utah, and Arizona. It is one of the Four Corners states. The borders of these states allow people to stand in all four states at once.
Due to the diversity of Colorado’s geography, the climate is diverse as well. The Eastern Plains is semiarid. West of the plains and foothills the weather can differ greatly. It can be a semi-arid, alpine, or a humid microclimate. Extreme weather can be hail, thunderstorms, tornados, floods, and even areas that experience draught. Earthquakes have occurred as well.
Colorado is known for fine art, film, film festivals, cuisine, wine, and beer. Colorado is recognized as a top state for business. Philanthropy and natural resources are impactful aspects of the state’s makeup as well. Seven major military bases are in Colorado. There are many scenic, historic, and recreational areas including four national parks, eight national monuments, and two national recreation areas. Five major professional teams are based in Colorado. College athletics are popular as well.
