California is inspirational. California was admitted to the Union of the United States of America on September 9, 1850. California’s nickname is The Golden State. Gold is the color of first place in events and California does come in first in some respects. California is first in population. Variety is great as well as it is the third largest state by area. Geographic diversity ranges from mountains and forests to deserts and coastal regions and even agricultural land. California Central Valley is in the middle of the state. The Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, coastal mountain ranges, The Cascade Range, and the Tehachapi Mountains surround The Central Valley which is California’s agricultural heartland.
Mount Whitney in Sierra Nevada is the highest peak in the lower 48 states. Yosemite valley in this range contains Sequoia National Park. The gigantic trees found here are recognized as the largest living organisms on Earth. Almost half of state’s surface area is covered by forests of some variety.
Given the size and geographic diversity of California, the climate and plant and animal diversity is great as well. Areas range from subarctic to subtropical zones. Death Valley, a desert with areas below sea level in the state, recorded the highest temperature in the world at 134 degrees F. Boca recorded the lowest temperature in California at -45 degrees F. The largest, tallest, and oldest trees are in California, but the state is divided into six life zones. Plant and animal life is quite diverse. In fact 123 animal and 178 plant species were recently listed on endangered or threatened lists. Californians and the US Fish & Wildlife Service are working to improve this environmental issue.
The economy of California has a gross national product that is the largest in the United States. Trade, transportation, utilities, government, services, leisure, and tourism are major sectors of employment. Agriculture and technology are essential to the economy as well.
California has well-respected sports teams and games. Nineteen major professional sports leagues call California home. California has hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympics.
The California Gold Rush, California’s bordering states, bordering Mexico, immigration, and the Hollywood film industry all have added to California’s rich history and influence. Be inspired! Have a bright day!
*On a personal note, I wish to extend my thoughts and prayers to those involved in yesterday’s tragedy in California.
