Dogs are inspirational. Dogs are the oldest domesticated animals. They separated from a wolf-like candid in Eurasia 40,000 years ago. Pet dogs and dogs that work with and for humans have had a significant impact on human culture. Dogs have been given the nickname “man’s best friend”.
Dogs very greatly in size, appearance, and behavior. Dogs are predators and scavengers. They are muscular and have sharp teeth. The smallest adult dog was a Yorkshire Terrier who stood only 2.5 inches and the head and body was only 3.7 inches long. This Yorkshire Terrier weighed in at just 4 ounces. At the other extreme was a English Mastiff that weighed 343 pounds. This dog was 98 inches from snout to tail. The tallest dog is a Great Dane that measures 42 inches at the shoulder.
Dogs coats of fur and tails are varied as well. Their fur can be short and smooth or long and thick or somewhere in between. Their colors and markings can be very different depending on their breed. For instance, during my life my four-legged friends have been several colors. Cindy was a mahogany colored Irish Setter I had as a childhood pet. Christy and Chelsea had blond and brown with white markings. These were family mixed-breed pets during my teenage years. My family adopted Tasney, a black lab, next. I now have Hawkeye. He is brown and white and was born a runt Boston Terrier. Like most dogs kept as pets these dogs learned our routines, some tricks, and could respond to some commands.
It is recommended that dogs be neutered and inoculated against disease. There is a problem with overpopulation of dogs in some countries. The Humane Society of the United States reports putting down 3 to 4 million dogs and cats a year. People are encouraged to adopt pets from animal shelters to help combat this problem.
In addition to being pets, dogs do several jobs for humans. Dogs are hunters, herders, carry loads, are guards/protectors, assist police and the military, and aid blind and otherwise handicapped individuals. Some dogs have even been known to detect an oncoming seizure by an epileptic handler in time to get help or medication. While dog bites and rabies are a danger to humans, the help and jobs listed above add to the benefits of having a dog as a companion and pet. There is evidence that dog owners are more physically and psychologically fit.
Dogs have key roles in mythology, religion, and culture. They have been depicted in art for thousands of years. Dogs have had key roles in literature, film, television, animation, music, video games, and as mascots for sports and advertising. No wonder they are considered “man’s best friend”. Be inspired! Have a bright day!
