Barack Obama. Barack Obama was inaugurated as the forty-fourth President of the United States of America on January 20, 2009. This election and inauguration made him the first African American male to serve the United States as President. He also made a record by becoming the first President that was born in Hawaii. President Obama was reelected in 2012 and sworn in on January 20, 2013.
Barack Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1961. His parents met while attending the University of Hawai’i. His white mother was from Kansas and his black father was from Kenya. Schooling led to them moving to different states and his parents divorced in 1964. Barack Obama Sr. moved back to Kenya in 1964 and then remarried. His mother remarried in 1965. His stepfather was from Indonesia and the young family later moved there. Barack Obama moved back to Hawaii to live with his maternal grandparents in 1971. His mother lived in Hawaii and in Indonesia at times until her second divorce in 1980. She earned a PhD in 1992 and then died of cancer in 1995. His father had died in an automobile accident in 1982.
Barack Obama moved to California to attend Occidental College in 1979. In 1981 he transferred to Columbia University in New York. He studied political science and graduated with a BA in 1983. He became a community organizer in Chicago, Illinois a couple of years later. In 1988 he entered Harvard Law School. He was an editor and later president of the Harvard Law Review. He graduated with a JD degree in 1991. He was then hired by the University of Chicago Law School. He joined a law firm specializing in civil rights and neighborhood economic development. He married Michelle Obama in 1992. He served on the board of directors of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge from 1995 until 2002.
He served as a member of the Illinois Senate from 1997 until 2004. Next, her served as a United States Senator from 2005 until 2008. In 2008 Joe Biden was selected as Barack Obama’s presidential running mate. Shortly after his election President Obama received the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize. Obama signed economic stimulus legislation into law to combat the Great Recession. “Obamacare”, Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repeal Act of 2010, ending U.S. military involvement in Iraq, Increasing U.S. troop levels in Afghanistan, the death of Osama bin Laden, and many other things occurred during his first term.
During his second term, President Obama has repeatedly championed equality. He asserts that people should have equal rights and protection under the law regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability. He promoted gun control, ordered military intervention in Iraq to response to gains made the Islamic State, ending combat in Afghanistan, and improved U.S. relations with Cuba.
Barack and Michelle Obama had two daughters, Malia and Sasha. His family members have diverse backgrounds and he speaks some Indonesian, as well as English. He is known for being a strong orator. He has published books as well. Be inspired! Have a bright day!
