Do you enjoy tennis?  The revival of the game’s popularity is said to have happened in the 1990s because of the sport’s player that is the topic of today’s inspiration.  Andre Agassi.  Agassi is considered to be one of the greatest tennis players of all time.  He is a United States gold medalist and an eight-time Grand Slam champion.  He was the first male singles player to win all four Gran Slam tournaments on hard, clay, and grass surfaces.  His career lasted over 20 years and his nickname was The Punisher.

Andre Agassi was born in Las Vegas, Nevada and had three older siblings.  He played against adults and his father coached him.  When he was 13 he was sent to Nick Bollettieri’s Tennis Academy in Florida.  After seeing Agassi play Bollettieri insisted he stay and train for free.  He turned professional when he was 16 years old.

Despite some injuries he achieved many victories including his Career Golden Grand Slam.  After the 2006 US Open, he retired.  He has participated in many charity tournaments, including doubles matches with his wife and fellow tennis star Steffi Graf.  He works for the charity he founded, as well as, other charities.  He has been involved in business ventures and endorsements.  With his long-time trainer he introduced a line of fitness equipment in 2012.  He has appeared in advertisements on television.  His autobiography Open was published in 2009.

Andre Agassi founded the Andre Agassi Charitable Association in 1994.  This group assists disadvantaged youth.  He has helped and raised funds for Boys & Girls Clubs, schools, healthy lunches for children, in times of natural disaster, and cancer among other causes and ventures.  He is known as charitable and socially involved.  He focuses on academics, health, and athletics.

Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf were married in 2001.  They have a son and a daughter.  They have stated that they will not push their children into professional tennis.

Over the last few decades tennis has become more popular.  Perhaps, Andre Agassi is one of the reasons why.  Whether or not his life and career can be credited with the sport’s resurgence, Andre Agassi is inspirational.  Be inspired!  Have a bright day!
